How to Write Excitement

Excitement is described as a feeling of great enthusiasm and eagerness.

In this post I will go through some basic tips for writing excitement that you can use in your writing.

Body Language and Speech

  • Laughing

  • Bouncing from foot to foot

  • Squealing and yelling

  • Telling jokes

  • Using a loud voice

  • Singing or humming

  • Talking over each other in a group setting

  • Verbalising thoughts and feelings, usually without thinking about it first

  • Lifting someone up or swinging them around

  • Acting hyper, immature, or foolish

  • Being unable to stay still

  • Good-natured shoving and pushing

  • Waving the arms, using exaggerated gestures

  • Drumming feet on the floor

  • Hugging or grabbing onto someone’s arm and holding it

  • Raising up or bouncing on tiptoe

  • Phoning or texting to share news or pass on the excitement

  • Speed-talking with others, heads close together, gossipy

  • Throaty laughter

  • Giggling

  • Friendly demands, such as “Tell me!” or “Let’s go!”

  • Excessive nodding or bobbing their head

  • A distinct walk, such as a fast-paced strut

  • Lots of eye contact

  • Displaying affection with friends or loved ones

  • Pacing, energised and bouncy

  • Concealing the mouth

  • Rubbing hands together or clapping

Facial expressions

  • A wide grin

  • Eyes that sparkle and gleam

  • A beaming face

  • Smiling

  • Twitching mouth

  • Licking the lips

  • Lips pressed together

  • Chewing the lip or biting the insides of the mouth/tongue

  • Blushing

  • Wide eyes

  • Raised eyebrows

  • Dilated pupils

What excitement feels like

  • Lightness in the chest

  • A fast pulse

  • Dry mouth

  • Heightened senses

  • Breathlessness

  • Adrenaline rush

  • Imagining what could happen

  • Impatience

  • A need to run, jump, scream

  • An intense desire to share the feeling with others

  • Racing heartbeat

  • Sweating

  • Tingling skin

  • Churning stomach

  • Nausea

  • Feeling light

  • Feeling energised

Suppressed Excitement

  • Controlling movement

  • Biting down on a smile

  • Swallowing a laugh or shout of glee

  • Feeling like their insides are vibrating

  • Smoothing down clothing

  • Eyes that glow with inner light

  • Nodding rather than speaking
