Writing in a gothic style is my favourite to write in, far above everything else!


So here are 50 gothic writing prompts to help get you into writing it too.

Haunted Places

  1. Every night, the abandoned church bell rings exactly thirteen times.

  2. A lighthouse keeper receives letters from a ship that sank a century ago.

  3. The new owner of a manor discovers a room that appears only during storms.

  4. Portraits in an old house slowly change while nobody is looking.

  5. A cemetery expands overnight despite no new burials.

  6. Every mirror in a castle reflects a different version of reality.

  7. A village is slowly being swallowed by an ancient forest.

  8. The clock tower stopped at the exact moment someone disappeared.

  9. A forgotten monastery appears only under the full moon.

  10. A woman hears footsteps above her attic despite there being no upper floor.

Ghosts and Spirits

  1. A ghost insists they were murdered, but historical records have no record they even existed.  

  2. Every generation of a family is haunted by the same child.

  3. A spirit can only communicate through writing.

  4. A grieving man discovers his dead wife can possess photographs.

  5. The ghost haunting a manor is terrified of something else lurking there.

  6. A medium accidentally summons someone from the future instead of the dead.

  7. The dead begin returning, but none remember how they died.

  8. A phantom appears every sunset at the edge of a cliff.

  9. An old music box traps souls inside its melody.

  10. A ghost hunter becomes haunted by their own future spirit.

  6. A hunter discovers every vampire in history shares the same origin.

  7. A vampire awakens after centuries to find their legend distorted.

  8. An immortal falls in love with someone hunting them.

  9. The vampire's reflection begins acting independently.

  10. A vampire realizes they are slowly turning human again.
